October 13 ... standing on her own (well, almost)

Thursday October 13, 2005 - the Restoration Team hit the ground running.

A nose jack was placed under the nose jacking point and the nose gear was put in the "down and locked" over-center position. The NG actuator was also reinstalled and the nose tires and bearings were removed so that they could accompany the main tire and wheels to Green Bay, Wisconsin to be filled and made solid for easier maintenance and towing.

Steve Farnsworth will be cleaning and repacking all the landing gear bearings.

Further landing gear work is on hold until some new MLG strut pins are produced along with one side attachment yoke.

After the nose was jacked up, both of the wooden cradle supports were removed. Nice to see the jet on three solid jacks.

While Tommy Lew, Scott Ranta and Pam were repairing a hole in the forward section of the left fuselage, the rest of the crew was cleaning up the bottom of the wings and continuing to remove screws from panels that will be weather sealed.  Pam Kurtz is the girl working on the patch.

Today we also removed most of the remaining preservative from the fuel cells in the wings. Most of it leaked out when the wings were shipped from Tucson, Arizona.

Others joining the work crew today were Scott Mills, Lee Nellist, Terry Pihlainen, Jimmy Heinz and of course "AWOL and lost in the mountains", Lani Duquette.

The next work session will be on Monday the 17th. This day will be spent removing and sealing upper fuselage and back bone panels.

It looks like there may be only four to five more work sessions for this year.  Work will resume next spring as soon as the hangar warms up.
