PHASE 2 - DAY 1

Restoration continues!

Most of the day was spent just getting our feet on the ground and getting all of the support equipment out of storage and get it running. "Air" and "Power" were the key words today. Steve Farnsworth reinstalled the instrument panel in the cockpit and came up with ideas to finish off that area so we can close and secure the canopy.

Bob Vick did a lot of little odd jobs that included sweeping the floor where the porta-potty was going to go, installed some missing screws in a couple of panels and helped Lani organize parts and equipment.

"Woody" Wood and Jim Heinz shot over 500 cherry-mac rivets into the entire wing fairing, top and bottom. BIG job but it is done. Jim and Woody also replaced several unsightly screws with rivets.

We also received word today that we have been given the approval from Marquette County to start the sanding and painting process as soon as we get to that point. There were some concerns raised by the county concerning the painting but all agencies involved have been contacted and everyone has made it a go.

Everyone working today was glad to get back to work. We will meet again next Thursday.

This is a test

PHASE 2 - DAY 2

PHASE 2 - DAY 3

Woody, Lani, Steve, Jim Heinz and Bob Vick were busy this morning.

Jim and Woody are still finishing up rivets while Steve and Lani installed the landing gear collars. After the collars were secured, the jacks were removed and now we are pleased that 0461 is completely standing on her own three legs.

Bob Vick and Steve then spent some time working in the cockpit and nose wheel well.

They also looked at options for installing a look a like radar on top of the instrument panel and constructed a template for covering the nose wheel well.

Woody and Jim head up to the speed brake board area next Thursday to start the process of closing them up. From there it will be on to the underside of the wings to start filling some holes where the wing pylons used to be installed.

We are moving along as planned. More local volunteers would help but we realize it is some what spring around here and people have a lot to do.

If you are interested, come out and give us a hand. We meet every Thursday at 9 am.

PHASE 2 DAY 4

Steve Farnsworth, Jim Heinz and Terry Pihlainen got a great start on our "officially" scheduled work day on Thursday by putting some extra time on the jet today. They did some much work that we have to call it a full work day.

The day was spent installing the radome, cleaning and scrubbing on the belly of the ole girl, installing a brace to secure the nose landing gear door and started the long process of sanding and getting her ready for her new paint.

Terry continued making templates for the sheet metal covering for the intakes.

Thursday we hope to repair a hole in the left speed brake board plus close them up and seal them off. We also plan to secure the rudder from flapping in the breeze. From there we will start cover other holes in the fuselage like the bleed holes in the missile bay doors and the IFR ramp on top of the back bone.

Sanding and smoothing will also become the words of the day. We hope to have the jet ready for paint when the hangar warms up.

PHASE 2 DAY 5

Prep continues!

Terry Pihlainen, our retired City of Marquette employee, is shown designing the intake cover template. Terry designed both the cover and the brackets to hold them. Not bad for a non-aircraft-experience guy! Good job!

Other chores included continuing cleaning of the belly and sanding of the upper fuselage.

Woody, our American Eagle, former SAC guy, has really been humping out on a lot of sheet metal repair work. Thank goodness those guys are around to help us. They have all done a great job.

The next work session has been scheduled plus we will be working a Saturday shift to accommodate the American Eagle guys who work during the week.

The radome is back on and Bob Vick spent the day polishing it up for the open house.
